Day 4: Love does not seek its own interests.

The virtue of generosity leads us to give to one another without concern for the consequences. In a marriage, a generous couple give to each other daily in small and large ways, through acts of service as well as material gifts.  Together, they give to others who are in need, according to their means.

Gianna Beretta Molla sacrificed her life to give birth to her child. Her husband described her as beautiful, intelligent, kind, and generous, a pious woman who trusted completely in God and loved life. When she found out that a large tumor was threatening the life of her unborn child, she refused to consider having an abortion, but insisted on having the tumor alone removed. As a doctor, herself, she knew that there was great risk to her life in giving birth after this procedure. She hoped that God would allow her to live, but she was happy to die for the sake of her child. She told her husband that if he is asked to choose between her life and the baby’s, she wanted him to choose the baby. Her biography describes a life of joy and happiness, from her youth in a loving family to her medical studies and work among the poor to her marriage and raising children with her husband. (Saint Gianna Her Life of Joy and Heroic Sacrifice by Giuliana Pelucchi published by Pauline Books and Media, October 15, 2019)

Dear Holy Spirit, through the intercession of St. Gianna Molla, please grant to (names) an increase in the virtues of generosity and joy. Help them to follow the example of St. Gianna Molla in their daily lives, being generous through joyful acts of service and material goods given with love. Help them to grow in virtue until their love is as close as humanly possible to Your love for them. Let this love for each other expand to include all those around them, especially those in their care. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
