Day 6: St. Gangulphus of Burgundy (died 760): Penance

Today we ask for an increase of penance. We do penance to atone for our own sins, but also for others. As we pray in the Divine Mercy Chaplet: “For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.” When someone we love is unrepentant, we can offer our penances for them, in the hope that God’s grace will reach their hardened hearts and bring them to repentance.

St. Gangulphus was a virtuous man whose wife cheated on him with a priest. “Gangulphus . . . forbade his wife from ever sharing his marriage bed and also ordered the priest to go abroad. Gangulphus meanwhile withdrew to his castle at Avallon, near Vézelay, performing works of penance and charity. However, his wife soon had her lover return. Hurrying back, the priest, wishing to decapitate Gangulphus, attacked him as he slept. However, the priest missed and injured Gangulphus' thigh. The wound, however, proved to be fatal and Gangulphus received the last sacraments on 11 May 760.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gangulphus.

Dear Lord, I pray for myself and (names). Through the intercession of St. Gangulphus, please increase our willingness to do penance. In examining our conscience, repenting of our sins, and doing penance, may we grow closer to You. We offer these acts in reparation for our sins and for all those who have hurt us. Through our prayers and example, may they come to repentance and conversion. Amen.
