Day 7: St. Margaret of Cortona (1247-1297): Devotion to the Holy Souls

Today we ask for an increase in devotion to the holy souls. Make a habit of praying for them every time you pass a cemetery and whenever you think about them. November is the month dedicated to the holy souls, and you can obtain indulgences for them by visiting cemeteries and praying for them. Along with acts of charity for the living, praying for the souls in purgatory is a way to focus our attention on others and away from our own pain.

St. Margaret of Cortona became the mistress of a nobleman named Arsenio who would not marry her. She lived with him for nine years and had a son. Arsenio’s sudden death started her thinking about her sin. Helped by Franciscan priests, Margaret left Arsenio’s home and made a new life for herself. She devoted the rest of her life to good works and prayer for the holy souls. “When Margaret herself was dying, she had a vision of a vast company of souls streaming out of heaven: They were the souls she had ransomed from purgatory with her prayers.” https://www.simplycatholic.com/st-margaret-of-cortona/.

Dear Lord, I pray for myself and (names). Through the intercession of St. Margaret of Cortona, please increase our devotion to the Holy Souls. May these prayers bring many souls out of purgatory and into Your Glorious Light. Amen.
